The Round 16 of the 2017 Super Rugby competition may have come and gone, and the final Test between the All Blacks and the British & Irish Lions in Auckland a thing of the past but one thing that sticks its ugly head of the controversial decision from French ref RomainPoite.
The man in the middle continues to be dragged on social media and in rugby analysis for his controversial call. The ref initially awarded the New Zealand contingent a kickable penalty but then changed his mind and awarded a scrum to the hosts.
The referee was believed to have made the accidental off side call after being influenced by the Lions skipper Sam Warburton. This might not have been much of an issue if it was earlier in the game but it was so late in the game and contributed to the 15-15 stalemate.
Hooker Ken Owens seemed to have played the ball from the off side position. Penalties have been awarded for this in the past. All Black captain Kieran Read did the same thing but the officials failed to pick it up. (more…)
