Samuel Eto’o placed a €100,000 bet with an Antalyaspor fan following their poor start to the Super League campaign.
Antalyaspor are currently leveled at the bottom of the Turkish Super Lig, but Samuel Eto’o is confident of a new leaf.
The 35-year old striker, Eto’o is hardly the shy and retiring type, so it is not really amazing that he took the recent critics to task following his team’s slow start to the season as fans are not impressed.
The team’s latest game saw them snatch a draw from the jaws of victory when Rizespor’s stoppage time equalizer on Monday night denied Antalyaspor their first win of the season.
After the 1-1 draw, the veteran striker went to meet with outraged fans and reportedly put his money where his mouth was by telling one supporter that he would bet him €100,000 assuring him that the team would finish the season among the top ten.
As reported by Goal, the fan was named in the Turkish press as Mehmet Akdeniz and asked Eto’o: “We have Besiktas next, what will the state of the team be and when will we win?” The former Chelsea, Everton and Barcelona striker responded through an interpreter, assuring him that the Akrepler would finish in the top half.
“We will finish in the top 10 of the Super Lig, I stand by what I said and my promise,” he said. “Believe me, I will give you €100,000 if we don’t finish in the top 10.”
As the league still looks fresh. Eto’o’s side have only gathered three points from their opening seven games which left them two points adrift at the bottom of the league. The former Cameroon international joined Antalyaspor on a three-year deal in 2015, finding the net 13 times in his first 15 matches before having a stint as interim player-manager.
